I've never understood
the “get wasted and make mistakes” mentality that so many people have around this time of year (or any time, for that matter). I don’t understand what’s so appealing about it. People talk about it as if it’s a good thing. I don’t know about you, but my idea of a good time is not slurring my speech, making a fool of myself, and hooking up with someone I hardly...

Getting ready to post a lot of photos.
Just of me and my friends. Finally found my camera and decided to actually upload the pictures onto my computer. They’re all from this past summer and a few from more recently and a few from last night.
I wish the wind would stop blowing so hard.
It’s making it really difficult to smoke a cigarette and stay warm. The flowerpot (full of dead flowers) hanging from the tree is spinning back and forth like it’s taunting me. The trees are all naked and sad. The street is too dry and cold. The house across the street is burning a fire and I can see the smoke coming from the chimney, and for some reason it’s depressing me. The...
It's Friday everybody!
You know what I hate about seasons?
Well, that title implies that I generally dislike seasons, and that is false. Anyway, here’s what I hate about seasons; more specifically, winter and summer.*
Reasons I Hate Winter:
1. When it’s summer and I’m sick of the heat, I am dying for winter to arrive. But it arrives so slowly that by the time it’s finally here in full force, I’m sick of it.
2. It lasts...
Tolerable Babies, Cuban Womanizers, Episcopalian...
The temperature had dropped down to thirty, and the mixture of rain and snow had begun to fall intensely by the time I realized that the store was closing. This was strange weather for Texas, but I accepted it and lit another cigarette. I wasn’t sure exactly why I was in Texas, but I accepted that too. I finished my cigarette and went back inside for a few more minutes of warmth before being...
I am ordering pizza from a restaurant called...
and while I’m on hold, they’re playing death metal. I’ve decided that death metal is much more pleasant to listen to while on hold than elevator music or soft rock.
I remember once I sat on a bus to greater things; saying a lot for the period.
Out that window on the border of blue and green; the older life transgressed a previous vital law; You Only Have One Home, and the sun digested the clouds.
And on the pier, my hands gramineaed and dye-stained, the air pollenated and abundant, souls grazed the asphalt steppe I dyed my heart sky-blue and kept tobacco in...

Driving to Grand Rapids today...
And I decided to make a mix for the road. This is my feeble attempt at an “indie” mix:
1. Wilco - Wilco (The Song)
2. David Byrne & Brian Eno - Strange Overtones
3. Andrew Bird - Tenuousness
4. Belle & Sebastian - To Be Myself Completely
5. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Carry Me
6. Cat Power - He War
7. The Long Winters - Blue Diamonds
8. The Decemberists - Here I...

Top 10 favorite songs:
I don’t know why I’m doing this. Just kidding, yes I do. It’s because I’m bored. And don’t give me any of that “bored people are boring” garbage. To this day, I still don’t see the logic in that phrase. When I think about the kind of person who’s never bored, they’re endlessly entertained either because a) they only do incredible...
The "good kind of alone", or, me rambling...
I know I talk about it a lot, but that’s because it’s essential to maintaining my sanity. Being alone in a good way, I mean. I’m not addicted to being alone, I don’t think, but I definitely need doses of isolation from time to time. I just got a dose of it, and now I’m satisfied and ready to reenter my small social world back in Cincinnati.
I came back to my...
