So, here’s a super, super rough demo I just recorded tonight. It’s the first song I’ve written all the way through in months (I’ve had a terrible bout of writer’s block) and I don’t know how I feel about it. It’s much different than my normal stuff, but oh well. If it sounds weird to you, it’s because I compressed the shit out of my vocals. I plan to add drums, background vocals, electric guitars, and bass, of course. Here are the lyrics:
if you are a sailor
take this letter from my dead hands
and go where I can’t go
take it man, I’m sure she’ll understand
that I can’t be there when I need to
no, I’m a wanted man
you can’t know, you’re just too cold
to understand what it’s like to give a damn
they told me that love was nothing but a breeze
well they don’t understand me, they don’t understand me
they told me that apples don’t fall far from the tree
well take a look at my family and tell me you still agree
they told me that everyone had tricks up their sleeves
that life was a mystery, to plan it real carefully
they told me that I should be locked up in a ward
I’m full of insanity, so drug and sedate me
well they were wrong
yeah they were wrong
they were liars, they don’t understand
they’re afraid to use their brains—
they don’t like what they don’t understand
I don’t need to understand
verse chords (fiddle)
the interstate calls my name at dawn
it beckons me to roam
and so I’ll go, there’s no high road
there’s only the cold that separates you from me
and the olympics, the rockies, the great divide
mark the distance to Seattle
where I’m alone
conscience condones
the actions I can’t take when I’m back at home
they told me that there was only one path to take
that everyone did it, but I didn’t give a shit
they told me that life’s about material things
money and possessions, I wonder what possessed them
they told me that I had a destiny
I cannot disagree, but it’s not the one that they see
they told me that God keeps a close eye on me
that he would punish me for my impurity
but I doubt he has time for that…
